The Highlands School Garden Committee was founded in 2008 to promote and support the creation of gardens and outdoor classrooms at Highlands School in Birmingham, Alabama.

Mission of the Garden Committee and goals for garden spaces on campus include:

Facilitate students, faculty, parents and friends of Highlands School in the planning and building of beautiful, inspiring outdoor spaces in which our children can learn and play

Provide opportunity to teach our children about outdoor habitats, chemical-free gardening and water conservation

Provide opportunity to teach our children about nature’s life cycle and where food comes from

Put in place sustainable, low-maintenance, self-perpetuating plantings

Create special areas reserved for special curricula

Engage with community at large regarding garden-related learning opportunities for our children
